Have you ever been in a situation where you're with your gaming buddies and, right in the middle of a heated Mario Kart race, you suddenly have nothing to say in conservation.  You try and you try to come up with something to say to break the silence filled only with controller clacking, but nothing comes to mind.  Never fear, for Bladefinger is here to ease your dilemma.  Today, I can give you some ice-breaking video game fun facts that are guaranteed to keep the discursion going.  Of course, as any good journalist, I take great pains in citing my sources.  If any of you doubt my information, simply check the links I post along with them to verify them for yourself.

If, for instance, you find yourself playing Super Smash Bros. (any entry will do), why not strike up an intercourse by dropping the factoid that the series originally did not star Nintendo characters.  Surprising, I know, but true.  And while your playmates are reeling by this mindblowing (and completely factual statement), why not follow it by saying that it originally starred caricatures of popular Sony characters, like Lara Croft or Crash Bandicoot.  However, it was Sakurai's idea to include “Nintendo all-stars” into the mix as well.  However, the Playstation characters were eventually dropped in order to put more focus on the Nintendo characters.  It is said that this dropped concept served as the inspiration for the recently released Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Pretty much everyone with half a brain stem has figured out that the Metroid takes heavy inspiration from the Alien series.  But, did you know that the original Metroid on NES was supposed to be an adaptation of Ridley Scott's popular sci-fi horror movies?  It never got far into development as such, though.  Production of the NES adaptation of the Alien movies was brought to a complete halt when H.R. Giger, who was brought in to act as art director for the game, accidentally offended Gunpei Yokoi's daughter by showing her one of his drawings of a particularly phallic monster.  The team at Nintendo instantly disliked Giger and refused to work with him anymore.  Ridley Scott, who was financing the project, refused to give them the Alien license if Giger was not at the helm of the art department.  So, the parties parted parts, with Nintendo taking what few assets they had from the project to make the Metroid we all know and love today.

And speaking of Metroid, the white whale of the series, Metroid Dread, was actually going to be a Metroid and Castlevania crossover.  The game was going to be about Samus's daughter, Virgina Belmont.  Yes, Samus hooks up with a Belmont.  Now, clean your blown mind off the wall.  Anyway, it would involve Virginia having to face a newly resurrected Dracula and his usual band of ghouls.  But that's not all.  See, after being resurrected for the umpteenth time, Dracula somehow manages to nab a batch of Metroids, and he plans on using them to take over the universe.  Only Virginia, with the combined blood of the Belmonts and the Chozo running through her veins can hope to stop the menace of both Dracula and the Metroids.  Or, she would be if this game were ever made.  Sadly, Metroid Dread is nothing more than vaporware now.

It's common practice for Nintendo to to give their consoles ultra-secret code names during their production.  The GameCube was code named “Dolphin”, N64 “Ultra 64”, Wii “Revolution”, and Wii U “Project Cafe”.  But what's the codename for the 3DS?  “Phoenix”.  Which is oddly appropriate when you consider how the system veritably arose from the ashes when it turned its low sales figures and is fast becoming the best-selling piece of hardware this generation.  It's also appropriate considering that the 3DS is home to the latest Phoenix Wright game, and, soon to enjoy 3D remakes of the original titles.
