Description

This is one of my projects for school. I thought it turned out so well, I would let others see it. The assignment was to depict a scene from Greek mythology using any medium. So, I chose to do a watercolor of Icarus falling from the sky.

That's a pretty fun assignment. I especially like the skin tone and the color of the hair--you can't see the individual strokes at all.

I also liked how you imitated the style of Greek vase painting. Icarus isn't even emaciated! Congratulations!

Attempting foreshortening was a daring thing to do. (You'll notice the Greeks decided against it.) The general consensus on foreshortening is to use references and perspective drawing techniques. On my bookshelf downstairs, I have a whole book of reference photos for the comic artist that would have a lot of foreshortening examples.

Reference photos would also be helpful for the sky and sea, but I have a hard time portraying those elements myself, so I won't say too much there. (Same goes for the gradation in the sky. I can't watercolor so I can't offer any advice.) I will advise you to look into negative space and composition ideas; there is a lot of sky/sea to poor Icarus.

The feathers tearing loose from Icarus's wings are a good idea; they really add to the movement of the character.

Finally, I must say you've really improved your watercolor technique. The colors are really vibrant and you've got a lot of good stuff going on in this piece. Keep up the good work!
